What is dengue fever?

Dengue is a viral disease with mosquitoes as its vector and has rapidly spread to all regions in recent years. Dengue causes a broad spectrum of diseases that can range from subclinical diseases (people may not realize that they got dengue) to severe symptoms and hemorrhage. The virus is mainly transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. This variant of mosquitoes is widespread throughout the tropics. It means that about half of the population in the world is at risk of dengue fever.

Based on dengue cases reported by WHO, the number of dengue cases increased over 8 fold in the last 2 decades. The number grew from 505 thousand cases in 2000 to over 5.2 million in 2019. Reported death also rose from 960 cases in 2000 to 4032 in 2015.

What are the symptoms of dengue fever?

The most common symptom of dengue is fever. The high fever (the body temperature will get to 40oC) will be followed by nausea and vomiting. A rash appears two to five days after the onset of fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, bone pain, and pain behind the eyes. These mild symptoms may be mistaken for flu or another illness and will happen 4 to 10 days after getting bitten by mosquitoes.

People mostly recover within a week or so, but in some cases, the symptoms worsen and become severe and life-threatening. This condition happens when the platelets in our bloodstream drop drastically and blood vessels become damaged. Please beware of several symptoms: stomach pain, constantly vomiting, bleeding from gums or nose, fatigue, and restlessness. Seek the nearest hospitals and medical clinics if severe symptoms occur.
